Generation Orbit Launch Services, Inc. (GO) completed a third successful test flight of its GO Flight Experiments Testbed (GO-FET) today in Cartersville, GA. The GO-FET provides a captive carry flight-test platform for maturing new small spacecraft and nanolauncher technologies including avionics, GN&C, thermal, ground and space communication, loads & vibrations, and exposure to high altitude atmospheric conditions. Researchers and developers use the testbed to raise the technology readiness level of their hardware prior to actual spaceflight.
Phoenix Air Group of Cartersville provided the carrier aircraft and GO engineers served as the flight test team. The primary payload on today’s flight was for an undisclosed customer. Several internal company experiments and secondary payloads were also onboard.
Notably, the flight carried a 1U CubeSat built by a team of middle school students from The Weiss School in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Several of the team members and their Faculty advisor, Mr. Kevin Simmons, were on hand for pre-flight integration and checkout. The students collected information on atmospheric properties and CubeSat accelerations over the duration of the flight. The mission of The Weiss School is to unleash the potential of gifted students with an emphasis on creativity, communication and critical thinking skills across all areas of the curriculum.
Generation Orbit fully supports efforts to engage students in STEM fields and promotes hand-on educational experiences for the next generation of engineers and scientists.
GO is also actively developing the GOLauncher 1 hypersonic flight testbed and suborbital launch vehicle. GOLauncher 1 will utilize a Gulfstream G-III carrier aircraft and a single-stage rocket booster to reach high Mach or high altitude flight test conditions in free flight.
